Selling online in Pakistan has its own realities: cash on delivery is still common, couriers and delivery integration matter, many customers browse on mobile data, and a lot of buying decisions start on Instagram or WhatsApp. The platform you build your online store on needs to handle all of that.
The first big decision is usually Shopify or a custom e-commerce website. Here is how to think about it.
Shopify: the fast, managed option
Shopify is a hosted e-commerce platform. You pay a monthly subscription, and Shopify handles hosting, security and the core store features.
Good for:
- Launching quickly
- Teams without in-house developers
- Standard catalogues: products, variants, collections
- Store owners who want to manage products and orders themselves
Watch out for:
- Monthly subscription plus app subscriptions that add up
- Transaction fees depending on your plan and payment setup
- Limits on how far you can customise checkout and some store logic
- Payment gateway and courier support — check that the providers you want to use offer a Shopify integration
A custom e-commerce website: full control
A custom store is built specifically for your business — either fully custom or as a "headless" front end on top of a commerce engine.
Good for:
- Unusual catalogues, bundles or pricing rules
- Deep integration with your ERP, inventory or own delivery system
- Brands where the shopping experience itself is a selling point
- Businesses that want to avoid ongoing per-app subscription costs
Watch out for:
- Higher upfront cost and a longer build
- You need a reliable development partner for maintenance
- Security, hosting and updates become your responsibility (or your developer's)
Five questions to decide
- How unusual is your catalogue? Standard products point to Shopify; complex configurations point to custom.
- Which payment and delivery providers do you need? Confirm integrations exist for your chosen platform before deciding.
- Who will run the store day to day? Non-technical teams usually find Shopify easier.
- How fast do you need to launch? Shopify is almost always faster.
- What will it cost over three years? Compare subscriptions and apps against build and maintenance — not just the launch price.
Things every Pakistani online store needs
Whichever platform you choose, get these right:
- Mobile-first design — most visitors will be on a phone
- Fast product pages — compress images and avoid heavy scripts
- Clear delivery and return information on every product page
- Cash on delivery and online payment options where they make sense
- WhatsApp contact for customers who want to ask before buying
- SEO basics — product titles, descriptions, structured data and clean URLs so products can be found on Google
Migrating an existing store
If you already sell online and want to move platforms, protect what you have built: migrate products, customers and order history, and set up 301 redirects from old URLs so you do not lose your Google rankings.
Examples from our work
We have built online stores for fashion and food brands in Pakistan and for clients abroad — for example Siyaab Lawn Hub, a multi-brand fashion store, and Brooklyn Bites, a food ordering site.
