Karachi has no shortage of web development companies. Search for one and you will find freelancers, small studios, large software houses and agencies that do a bit of everything. The hard part is not finding a developer — it is telling the difference between a team that will ship a fast, maintainable website and one that will hand you a pretty homepage you cannot change without paying them again.

This checklist is the set of questions we would ask if we were on the other side of the table.

1. Look at live work, not mockups

Ask for links to live websites the team has built, not Dribbble shots or PDF case studies. Then open them on your phone, on mobile data, and check:

  • Does the site load quickly, or do you stare at a blank screen?
  • Does anything jump around while images load?
  • Can you find the contact details and the main call to action in a few seconds?

A portfolio of real, working sites tells you more than any sales call. (Ours is on the work page — food ordering, fashion e-commerce and trade services sites for clients in Pakistan, the US, France and Australia.)

2. Ask who owns the code, domain and hosting

This is the single most important question, and the one most often skipped. You should own:

  • The domain name, registered in your company's name
  • The hosting account or cloud project
  • The source code, ideally in a Git repository you control
  • Admin access to analytics, Search Console and any CMS

If an agency keeps all of this in their own accounts, you are not buying a website — you are renting one.

3. Agree on performance targets up front

"Fast" means nothing unless it is measured. A serious web development company will agree on targets before building, for example:

  1. Core Web Vitals in the "good" range on mobile
  2. No layout shift when images and fonts load
  3. A Lighthouse or PageSpeed report delivered at handover

Speed matters for users first, and Google uses page experience signals as part of how it ranks pages.

4. Check that SEO is built in, not bolted on

Technical SEO is cheapest when it is part of the build. Before you sign, confirm the website will ship with:

  • Clean, descriptive URLs
  • A unique title and meta description on every page
  • Proper heading structure (one H1 per page)
  • Structured data (schema.org) for your business and services
  • An XML sitemap and a correct robots.txt
  • Redirects from old URLs if you are replacing an existing site

A redesign that loses your existing Google rankings is not an upgrade.

5. Understand the process and who you will talk to

Ask how the project will actually run:

  • Will you see work in progress every week or two, or only at the end?
  • Who is your day-to-day contact — the person building the site, or an account manager relaying messages?
  • How are changes requested and approved?

Short cycles with a working version you can click through are the best protection against surprises.

6. Ask about the technology — and why

You do not need to be technical, but you should get a clear answer to "why this stack?". WordPress, Shopify, a headless CMS or a custom React/Next.js build can all be the right choice. The wrong answer is "because it's what we always use".

A good team will explain the trade-offs: how easy it will be for your staff to edit content, how fast it will be, and what it will cost to maintain.

7. Get the support terms in writing

Websites need updates, fixes and the occasional emergency. Before signing, know:

  • How long free support lasts after launch
  • What ongoing maintenance costs, if you want it
  • How quickly urgent issues are handled

8. Compare quotes on scope, not just price

Two quotes can look very different because they include different things. Line them up against the same list — pages, features, integrations, content, SEO setup, training and support — before comparing numbers. We cover this in more detail in what actually drives the cost of a website in Pakistan.

The short version

Choose the web development company that shows you live work, gives you ownership of everything, measures performance, builds SEO in from day one and explains its decisions in plain language.
